A deck can easily succumb to the harsh treatment by Mother Nature if it’s stained or painted. Plus, extreme winter weather, pouring rain, and ice all take a toll on a freshly painted or stained deck. To avoid deck repair in the future, you should touch up your deck every few years.
Wood decks last an average of 10 to 15 years. However, they can be maintained to allow for additional years of use. Additionally, maintaining wood can reduce the likelihood of injuries occurring.
Rotted wood
When exposed wood develops a depressed area, it indicates the wood beneath has decayed. Use a screwdriver to poke any soft spots to determine the extent of the rot. If you notice that it has already affected several boards, replace them all with new ones.
Wobbly railings
Railings are essential for keeping you from falling off your deck. Without them, people can accidentally slip and fall off the deck. If you notice this issue, have someone repair the railings immediately to prevent serious injury.
Deteriorated posts
Durable deck posts help secure the railing. Replace immediately if there is any rotted flooring around the posts. Additional repairs are needed as soon as several damaged posts exist. Only keep the deck posts that are in working condition.
