Do you have a new addition to your family coming? It is an exciting time for sure, and there is a lot to think about. One important aspect is to ensure that your baby is safe in your home. While it might seem like it will take some time before it will be an issue, your baby will be crawling around before you know it. This is why it’s important to consider the baby’s perspective when crawling. Consider what is within reach, and constantly revisit the measures as the baby grows.
Most common issues to consider:
- A baby can quickly ingest small objects and items on the floor. If a baby can reach an object on the floor, consider moving it or discontinuing its use for a while.
- Can the jagged edges on furniture like end tables or coffee tables be covered?
- Is all your furniture securely fastened to prevent tip-overs?
- Cover the electrical outlets with plates to prevent access.
- Instead of using pressure doors in unsafe rooms or stairwells, use safety gates that attach to the wall. These gates are more secure than pressure doors and provide better protection.
- Use door stops and holders on the hinges to prevent a toddler’s hands from getting stuck.
- Childproof locks should be applied to all cabinets.
